The women in science staging a quiet revolution


Marie Curie is in need of a rest. For a century the French-Polish scientist has been held up as the model of women in science. And rightly so — she was a double Nobel laureate who discovered two elements.

If you spend too long as a role model, however, you become the opposite: instead of facilitating change you emphasise the lack of change. In recent years there has been a movement among those seeking to attract girls to science to highlight the contribution of other women — one even called itself Beyond Curie. After the year science has had, it seems unlikely that they will need to look far.
